She’s a huge movie star with a Country Music star as a husband and a baby on the way. Nicole Kidman is at the top of her game. The “Moulin Rouge” actress was spotted at a photocall today (Wednesday) for her movie “The Golden Compass.” An...d it’s clear that the Japanese people love her.Nic wore an avant-garde black semi-see-through dress with furry-fluffy shoulder accents and the beginnings of a cute baby bump. The 40-year-old actress explained the delicate balance between work and kids during a recent interview. “My Bella and Connor are 13 and 15. So they have seen the film [The Golden Compass] and they loved it...my child inside won’t see the film for a long time. But I think once you have children you want to balance the work you do because they give up so much of you to your work. So occasionally you want to make films that they can take their friends to, they can go to the premiere of… that they celebrate.”

Smaller films in Oscar spotlight

Smaller films in Oscar spotlight

Category: Cinema & TV  - Posted by: rapvirus  on Jan 31st, 2008

Cast an eye down this year's Oscar shortlist and you will see two contrasting kinds of movies. On the one hand you have violent, downbeat, male-dominated dramas like No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood. On the other you will find smaller..., more gentle fare notable for having female talent both in front of and behind the camera. In terms of scale, too, the nominations seem to cover both ends of the spectrum. In one corner you have the epic sweep of British hopeful Atonement and the bloody Grand Guignol of Sweeney Todd. And then you have quieter, more delicate stories tackling such difficult subjects as teenage pregnancy, senile dementia and - in the case of Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - debilitating physical incapacity.

“No Country for Old Men” emerged as the Oscars favorite Sunday by taking top honors for overall cast along with Javier Bardem’s supporting-actor prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the lone gathering of A-list stars in an awards season hob...bled by the writers strike. Bardem had kind words for Joel and Ethan Coen, who directed “No Country” and adapted the screenplay from Cormac McCarthy’s novel. “Thank you, guys, for hiring me, and thank you for taking the hard work of choosing the good takes,” Bardem said. The native of Spain won the same honor at the Golden Globes, and has been universally praised for his chilling role as a relentless killer tracking a fortune in missing drug money.

Another year, another downward turn for the record business. So what will the industry do? While overall music sales were up 14 percent in 2007, most of that growth was due to the sale of digital tracks. More telling, album sales were down 9.5 percen...t, and every genre suffered a sales decline, from rap (down a whopping 30 percent) to rock (12.5 percent) to country (16.3). So The Associated Press decided to ask a few industry insiders — and one notable businessman outside it — what, if anything, can be done to reverse the slide in 2008. Here are their opinions.
