John McCain as their party's nominee while Sen. Barack Obama cut into Sen. Hillary Clinton's lead in the race for Democratic delegates. Obama claimed victory ...in Louisiana, Nebraska and Washington on Saturday, as well as in the Virgin Islands. "The stakes are too high and the challenges are too great to play the same old Washington game with the same old Washington players and expect a different result," Obama told a hugely supportive crowd of Democrats at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Richmond, Virginia. "People want to turn the page. They want to write a new chapter in American history." |

Olympic Skaters Get Engaged on IceCategory: Sports - Posted by: KingM on Jan 29th, 2008John Baldwin didn't win a gold medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this weekend – but he did get the girl. Moments after he and Rena Inoue, his skating partner of seven years, completed their silver-medal-winning pairs performance Saturd...ay, Baldwin, 34, got down on one knee in the middle of the ice and proposed. As the crowd of spectators at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., read Baldwin's lips on the jumbotron, they began chanting, "Yes! Yes!" But Inoue, for one, stood there dumbfounded. "I was shocked!" Inoue, 31, tells PEOPLE. "I saw him on one knee and thought he was going to tell me how proud he was – and then he asked me to marry him. Then I started crying and I said yes." The two began skating together in 2000, after completing the respective singles careers (he skated for the U.S., she for Japan). They competed together at the Torino Olympics (finishing 7th) and have won two national pairs titles. On Saturday, they finished second to skaters Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker – but that hardly seemed to matter to the ecstatic bride-to-be. |

John Mayer steps up to the mic for JessicaCategory: Music Industry - Posted by: KingM on Jan 17th, 2008Jessica Simpson has taken her fair share of grief from the people of Texas for distracting Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo during the playoffs, but an unlikely person has stepped in to defend Simpson. Ex-boyfriend John Mayer posted the following... on his blog: “Dear Dallas and Surrounding Areas, I have never known anyone to have more pride in their home state and their upbringing in it than Jessica Simpson has in Texas … It’s one of her most defining traits as a person. So please don’t try and take that away from her. (You probably wouldn’t be able to, but it’s less work for all involved.) |

John For JessCategory: Music Industry - Posted by: KingM on Jan 16th, 2008John Mayer and Jessica Simpson have been kaput for awhile, moving onto Minka Kelly and Tony Romo respectively, but Mayer still looks out for his ex. The Simpson backlash after Romo’s Dallas Cowboys got booted out of the playoffs is intense, and May...er is asking Cowboy and football fans to stop blaming Simpson. He wrote this on his official blog: “DON’T EX WITH TEXAS" Dear Dallas and Surrounding Areas, This isn’t a sports blog, and it isn’t a publicity stunt. (but have at me if it feels right.) This is about doing what I think is right as a person, in this case speaking my mind. |

McCain, Romney in tight race as Mich. votesCategory: Politics - Posted by: KingM on Jan 15th, 2008John McCain sought to keep his momentum going strong. Mitt Romney looked to keep his candidacy afloat. And Mike Huckabee simply wanted to keep defying expectations. No matter the winner, the Republican presidential primary in Michigan on Tuesday prom...ised to add another wrinkle to a nomination fight that has defied a clear favorite. Snow fell across much of the state, half a foot before noon in some places, threatening to dampen turnout that was already expected to be light. In the state of his birth, Romney voiced edgy confidence in his chances and so did McCain, who won Michigan in the 2000 primary race. Outside a Baptist church in Warren, Huckabee was happy to see the freezing temperatures and snowfall, reasoning that his evangelical base would come out to vote when others less committed might not. "That can only be good for us because I think most of our voters are very focused. We hope so, anyway." |

Five myths about torture and interrogationCategory: Politics - Posted by: rapvirus on Dec 24th, 2007Sothe CIA did indeed torture Abu Zubaydah, the first al Qaeda terrorist suspect to be waterboarded. So says John Kiriakou, the first former CIA employee directly involved in the questioning of "high-value" al Qaeda detainees to speak publicly. He min...ced no words recently in calling the CIA's "enhanced interrogation techniques" what they are. But did they work? Torture's defenders, including the wannabe tough guys who write Fox's "24," insist that the rough stuff gets results. "It was like flipping a switch," said Kiriakou about Zubaydah's response to being waterboarded. But the al Qaeda operative's confessions — descriptions of fantastic plots from a man whom journalist Ron Suskind has reported was mentally ill — probably didn't give the CIA any actionable intelligence. Of course, we might never know the whole truth, because the CIA destroyed the videotapes of Zubaydah's interrogation. But here are some other myths that are bound to come up as the debate over torture rages on. |
