The flagship newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party called Saturday for efforts to "resolutely crush" anti-government demonstrations by Tibetans, while Beijing urged people to turn in those on a "Most Wanted" list of 21 protesters. As Chinese tr...oops smothered Tibetan-heavy areas to avert additional unrest, U.S. presidential hopeful John McCain, a Republican, and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, joined a growing international chorus of criticism against the crackdown. The protests, which started in Lhasa on the March 10 anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule, turned violent four days later and touched off demonstrations among Tibetans in three other provinces.

Kenya's opposition leader has called off nationwide rallies planned for Tuesday, following disputed elections. Raila Odinga said he hoped international mediation could solve the crisis. He says the vote was rigged in favour of President Mwai Kibaki. ...The top US official for Africa, Jendayi Frazer, has said Kenyans have been "cheated" by their political leaders. The police now say that 600 people have died in election violence - up from the previous official figure of 350. Some 250,000 people have fled their homes in clashes between rival political supporters, ethnic groups and the police.

In a shocking move, the Japanese government has backed down and suspended plans to hunt up to 50 humpback whales after extreme protests by the Australian people and government. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had recently announced plans to dis...patch an armed observation ship to track the Japanese whaling fleet and gather evidence for a possible lawsuit at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The news was revealed by chief government spokesman Nobutaka Machimura in a press conference today. Machimura said: “Japan will not hunt humpback whales.”
